Medicine is undergoing tremendous change. Unlike today, medicine of tomorrow would be pro-active rather than reactive. Medicine would soon be personalized to individual patient’s genome. It would predict, and hence prevent, diseases even before they manifest. Also, this medicine would require active societal participation to bring it from labs to clinics. This upcoming framework of medicine, that will replace the existing one within the next two decades, has been termed as P4 Medicine, by Dr. Leroy Hood. I have earlier written briefly on P4 medicine here and another on the enabling technologies here. Here is a presentation on the technological challenges the P4 medicine faces and its promises.
