Bringing Engineering back into Genetic Engineering

Biologists love to call the recombinant DNA technology, Genetic Engineering. We cut parts of DNA from an organism, introduce into another and modify it in the process. We rely on discovering novel genes and proteins to look for new therapeutic and industrial approaches. But, is modifying or discovering something engineering? No, its not! Engineering is about developing things from scratch. Synthetic biology (or Genetic Engineering v2.0 as I love to  say it) would allow us to develop completely new organisms in the future and possibly alien-like too. It would impart to biology the elements which it lacks when compared to other types of engineering. What are those elements of engineering that genetic engineering lacks? Here is the answer.

  1. “developing things from scratch. Synthetic biology (or Genetic Engineering v2.0 as I love to say it) would allow us to develop completely new organisms in the future”
Dreaming it is really fascinating but only for a child or to a sci. fiction fan, as a grown up student u should think “wat will be the use ?” nature has already completed this job. u are already available with million species. why to repeat this ?
“But, is modifying or discovering something engineering? No, its not! Engineering is about developing things from scratch.” also this is childish. Engineering is actually modifying not developing from scratch. As an example, an automobile engineer never starts from designing wheels by cutting woods

    1. most indian engineers are only glorified mechanics.. and i sense the mechanic in you.. think of revolution, not evolution sir.. what sci-fi writers have predicted, they have always come true or will in the future.. as for repeating nature, i’d call that learning from nature.. for it has been conducting experiments for billions of years now.. as for automobil engineering, henry ford invented the “car” from scratch.. Also, long gone is your time when wheels were of wood.. i hope you do not take science further..
